ASHA in Atlanta

The 2012 convention of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) was held Nov. 15-18 in Atlanta. This year the Stuttering Foundation had a great location with a 30-foot, corner booth.

Paperboy Delivers for Kids

Author Vince Vawter’s new book Paperboy is about an 11-year-old boy growing up in Memphis in 1959. He throws the meanest fastball in town, but talking is a whole different ball game. He has trouble saying a word without stuttering.

Stuttering at Center of New Novel

Greenhorn by Anna Olswanger is a middle-grade novel in which a young Holocaust survivor arrives in 1946 at a New York yeshiva, a religious Jewish school, where he will study and live. His only possession is a small box that he never lets out of his sight.

Over the last several years, the Stuttering Foundation has kept accurate data on the calls it has received from concerned parents of 15,374 preschool children who are reported to be stuttering.

Our thoughts on the Australian study on preschool stuttering

As you may have already seen, the recent “big news” in the stuttering community is a new study from Australia. Below is the abstract sent to major media outlets earlier this week. Mel Tillis

Mel Tillis, born Lonnie Melvin Tillis, was an influential figure in country music, both as a songwriter and a performer. His journey to fame was marked by overcoming personal challenges, including a stutter that he turned into a defining part of his public persona.

Bob Love

The late Bob Love dreamt about being a great public speaker since his early days in Bastrop Louisiana, even though, as a young man, he could barely put two words together, let alone speak a full sentence.

In spite of his severe stuttering disability, Bob Love, the son of a sharecropper, rose to become a Chicago Bulls NBA superstar, whose records were eventually surpassed by Michael Jordan. Throughout his entire athletic career, Bob Love kept his stuttering a secret from the fans who adored him, thinking he could do his “talking” on the basketball court.

Kenyon Martin

Kenyon Martin, the basketball sensation who was named to the NBA’s All Star Team in 2004, joins other famous people who stutter in a new brochure. The brochure - which unfolds into a small poster - is available free of charge from The Stuttering Foundation.

The poster is intended to give children and adults who stutter inspiration as they grapple with their speech disorder.

Frank Wolf

This Virginian congressman has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1981. The longtime supporter of the Stuttering Foundation drew national attention to childhood stuttering in 2006 when he submitted an article about Tiger Woods from the SFA newsletter to the Congressional Record. The congressman is featured in the Stuttering Foundation's Famous People Who Stutter brochure.

Dave Taylor

Dave Taylor has been on the Stuttering Foundation's list of Famous People Who Stutter for many years, but probably few people know all of the unique accomplishments of this former hockey great who was born on December 4, 1955, in Levack, Ontario.
