Memphis, Tenn. (October 17, 2024) – October 22nd marks International Stuttering Awareness Day [2] (ISAD). Stuttering affects an estimated one percent of the world’s population—that’s more that 80 million people worldwide, and more than three million Americans.
Here are just six of the many ways the Stuttering Foundation brings its more than seven decades of expertise to those in need around the world:
- Most Stuttering Foundation materials are available free of charge on its website: StutteringHelp.org [3]. Materials are also available on several social media platforms [4], including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), and Pinterest.
- If you love your local library, Stuttering Foundation materials can be found in 16,571 libraries [5] across the United States and Canada.
- Stuttering Foundation materials have been translated into 46 languages by people who stutter and are available at https://www.stutteringhelp.org/translations [6].
- Virtual Learning by Stuttering Foundation, [7] hosted by Sara MacIntyre, M.A., CCC-SLP, attracts an average of more than 170 attendees from 45 countries each month for its online series of free, interactive workshops with a variety of offerings for speech-language pathologists, parents, and individuals who stutter.
- The Stuttering Foundation Podcast [8], in its sixth season, has attracted more than 115,000 free downloads, reaching listeners in 7,761 cities in 168 countries, and is expertly hosted by Sara MacIntyre.
- Since 1985, the Stuttering Foundation has held intensive workshops [9] to increase the pool of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) trained in the treatment of stuttering, with more than 1,200 alumni from all 50 states and dozens of countries. SLPs have brought their newly acquired skills to share with colleagues and others within the medical community to countries such as Taiwan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Spain, Portugal, Nigeria, Poland and throughout South America.
“Since its founding in 1947, the Foundation has continuously expanded its outreach to anyone, anywhere--providing up-to-date information and help for the prevention of stuttering in young children and the most effective treatment available for teenagers and adults,” said Jane Fraser, Stuttering Foundation President. “We’re just a click away from anyone in need.”
For more than 75 years, the Stuttering Foundation, the oldest and largest charitable nonprofit organization in the world working toward the prevention and improved treatment of stuttering, reaches more than a million people in more than 168 countries annually with help and resources.
