2011 Journalism Award Winners
The Stuttering Foundation announces its 2011 Awards for Excellence in Journalism.

“Thanks to The King’s Speech, the sheer volume of articles and interviews on stuttering made this year’s choice very difficult,” said Jane Fraser, president of the Foundation. “This film has raised awareness of stuttering beyond any level we could ever have imagined and, in turn, was the force behind all other entries.”

Two Meaningful Bequests
Gifts totaling more than $92,000 were received this year from the estates of two exceptional donors, Charles A. Wunder and Louise Cook Holmes.
Stuttering to the Top of the Charts
The Stuttering Foundation has recognized the song You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet, a 1974 number one hit by Bachman-Turner Overdrive, as being the most unique of the many rock songs featuring stuttering vocals.

Stuttering Foundation Earns Eight Awards for Website
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is the recipient of eight Parent to Parent Awards for its Website, www.StutteringHelp.org, which attracts millions of visitors each month from around the world. The Website offers free resources for those who stutter, their families, and professionals working with those who stutter.
Meet Board Member Joe Fulcher
Joe Fulcher plays a valuable role in the smooth operations and financial excellence of the Stuttering Foundation. Since 1984 he has served in the roles of Vice President, and Assistant Secretary and Treasurer. He also serves on the annual Audit Committee.

His dedication to his work with SFA is an example to the entire board and staff.

Tireless SFA Ambassador Woos Oprah

Like David Seidler said in his Oscar acceptance speech for The King’s Speech - “We have a voice. We have been heard”- Stuttering Foundation friend, patron, and unofficial Public Library Ambassador Leon ‘Jigger’ Sirois has been espousing that sentiment for years. Tirelessly working with his late-in-life found fluency on behalf of the Stuttering Foundation and all people who stutter, he too says we can be heard.

Mel Tillis

Mel Tillis, born Lonnie Melvin Tillis, was an influential figure in country music, both as a songwriter and a performer. His journey to fame was marked by overcoming personal challenges, including a stutter that he turned into a defining part of his public persona.

Lewis Carroll

The recent Disney version of Lewis Carroll’s classic, Alice in Wonderland, garnered a great deal of media hype. Even though the mainstream media has not made mention that Carroll was a person who stuttered, his family history gives credence to the discovery of the genetic link to stuttering. Carroll was born to parents who were first cousins; almost all of their eleven children, three girls and seven boys, struggled with stuttering past childhood.

Kenyon Martin

Kenyon Martin, the basketball sensation who was named to the NBA’s All Star Team in 2004, joins other famous people who stutter in a new brochure. The brochure - which unfolds into a small poster - is available free of charge from The Stuttering Foundation.

The poster is intended to give children and adults who stutter inspiration as they grapple with their speech disorder.

Bob Love

Bob Love has dreamt about being a great public speaker since his early days in Bastrop Louisiana, even though, as a young man, he could barely put two words together, let alone speak a full sentence.

In spite of his severe stuttering disability, Bob Love, the son of a sharecropper, rose to become a Chicago Bulls NBA superstar, whose records were eventually surpassed by Michael Jordan. Throughout his entire athletic career, Bob Love kept his stuttering a secret from the fans who adored him, thinking he could do his “talking” on the basketball court.

Darren Sproles

Darren Sproles, a former player for The Philadelphia Eagles, the New Orleans Saints and the San Diego Chargers, made history in 2007 when he became the first player in NFL history to return a kickoff and a punt for his first two NFL touchdowns in the same game. In 2021, he was selected to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
