Trouble at Recess

Young author wants playground to be fun for all

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Just in time for the back-to-school season, the Stuttering Foundation is publishing a new book, Trouble at Recess.

Written and illustrated by 8-year-old Jamie, Trouble at Recess describes the trials and tribulations that many children who stutter encounter both in the classroom and on the playground.

The main character, Molly, struggles with stuttering and learns how to handle the teasing by teaching her classmates about stuttering. She also finds out what makes a good friend.

“This book deals with problems all children encounter, not just children who stutter.” said Jane Fraser, president of the nonprofit Stuttering Foundation. “Since teasing is a universal topic, we believe children will benefit by reading about how to handle teasing and make good friends.”

The Stuttering Foundation is distributing Trouble at Recess free of charge to school libraries across the country.

The 30-page, full-color book is also available to teachers, parents, grandparents, and others for a nominal fee.

“I’m excited that my book might help other children who stutter,” said Jamie.
